Either way your opponent went down and that proves that you're better than them even if they beat you up in third grade and then told all of Mrs. Margard's class that you wet the bed and everyone calls you Sir Wetsalot all the way up 'til graduation and you think that adversely affected your college admission letters and ultimately your opportunity to better yourself through education.
At least you beat them in bowling one out of three times last Wednesday night...

I have a great gig.

No matter where the QCP is performing, no matter how "good" a show went, no matter how many more QCP converts we obtain, I always have an awesome job.

As the coach, I am blessed with the honor and privilege of working with these six fine, upstanding, funny, gentlemen. I think they're incredible improvisers, and even better men.

The Heavy Weight Title

There comes a time...... when we heed a certain call.....when the world must come together as one.....

(Ok.....so we may not be helping feed Ethiopians, but tonight, we ARE the world.)

You know those moments when everything comes together and you realize right then and there, that you better remember this....right now....take it all in........?

Well I am proud, honored, and DEEEEE-lighted to say that tonight's shows had those moments.

Improv is hard hard hard. Not going to lie. It's not for everyone, yet there are always those people who think they can just walk right up and do it. Ya' know.....People don't do that with boxing! Or high-rise window washing! Yet they think (and sometimes come up and say), "Oh I want to perform with you next time!" Normally I'm diplomatic, invite them to workshops, tell them about the rules, try to help them (nicely) see the way it really is with improv. They need to see that some people shouldn't try this at home. The highs are high, but the lows...? Well.....luckily the highs keep you in the game.

But you know what? After tonight.....if those people think they can still come play with the big dogs, then ok.......BRING IT!

Goooooooooooooooooooooood LUCK! Hope you're wearing protective gear, 'cause you're gonna' get KNOCKED OUT.

Life and Improv --- Rule #3

Hey there QCP fans!

We can't thank you enough for continuing to be there for us! You are our core, our base, our favorite people. And thanks to you, and all the pr work you do on our behalf, our fan base continues to grow and grow and grow! I am consistently blown away all the times I get stopped by one of you who not only tells me you've already got a seat reserved for the next show, but that you are bringing people with you. Humbly, we say thanks.

And it is due to all the new people you bring 'round that we are continuing this series of blogs on the rules of improv. We know it can be a bit overwhelming the first time you see an improv show. Heck! It's still overwhelming for us all these shows into it! So needless to say, we totally feel ya'! And with that in mind, on to the next rule.

Rule #3 -- Be Real

If you come to any improv workshop I lead, you're going to hear me say, "It's not about being funny, it's about being real. People laugh at what they relate to. And real life is funny."

Time after time, in an attempt to make people laugh, new improvers try to go for the joke. They think what they are about to say is funny, and will make people chuckle, so they are going to share it with all of us. And what happens when they do that? Crickets chirp. Tumbleweeds roll by. It falls flat, and was usually made at someone's expense. Or what happens most of the time is that it just was NOT funny. They tried too hard.

Actress/TV host Bonnie Hunt once talked about how improvisers who don't get this rule, just end up showing all the things they DON'T know. For instance, when you get a suggestion such as "nuclear war", the young improver goes immediately for the red phone, bomb shelters, and Gorbachev. Basically, all the things that not only they can't relate to, but the audience can't either. So Bonnie says that if that's what's chosen, then be real about it. Think about what you DO know. You know family life. You know school. So make the scene about a family in Iowa getting ready to leave for school the morning after the bomb dropped. Comedic potential without the crickets.

Legend in his own time, Keith Johnstone, says this in his book Impro:

The improviser has to realise that the more obvious he is, the more original he appears. ... No two people are exactly alike, and the more obvious an improviser is, the more himself he appears. If he wants to impress us with his originality, then he'll search out ideas that are actually commoner and less interesting. ...People trying to be original always arrive at the same boring old answers. Ask people to give you an original idea and see the chaos it throws them into. If they said the first thing that came into their head, there'd be no problem. ...Striving after originality takes you far away from your true self, and makes your work mediocre.

Wow....well.....there ya' go.

Life and Improv -- Rule #2

Thanks so much for the emails from those of you who've been reading these blogs about the rules. We are thrilled that it helps put a new perspective on what we're doing up there. So onward and upward! Here's the next one!

We like to say that "the only star of the improv troupe, IS the improv troupe".

Today's rule: Move the spotlight.

If you watch "Whose Line", they never start the show by saying, "Please welcome Colin Mochrie and the rest of the cast!" (Though I do like him best....) Each member is introduced at the same time, and no one gets a special shout-out over another.

Improvers all agree that making someone else look as good as they can not only helps in allowing that person to trust that you are going to AGREE AND ACCEPT what they offer, but it shows the audience that the troupe believes in one another, supports their thoughts and ideas, and is going to do anything and everything possible to take that scene as far as it can go. It helps you know that no one is going to take over the scene to make themselves look good, or to make a fellow player look bad.

Several years ago, I was blessed and honored to be able to interview Colin Mochrie (by email.) When asked about this rule, he said there are only a few things he needs from his fellow players. "All I expect from the people I am improvising with", he replied, "is for them to
listen, not to showboat, and to have fun. Pretty simple. Oh...and to buy something expensive for me."

Charna Halpern and Del Close are improv gurus. In their book, Truth In Comedy, they say it this way: ..if everyone justifies everyone else's actions, there are no mistakes. .....You bring and brick, and I bring and brick. Then together, we build a house.

It's easy to turn a conversation the way you want it to go. It's easy to take all the glory. However, as the old P.E. poster says, "There's no 'I' in TEAM." We haven't had gym class in a while, but we still believe this to be true.

Life and Improv - Rule #1

Hi Folks!

Missy, the coach of the QCP, here! It is so absolutely fantastic that at each show we keep having people in the audience who have NEVER seen an improv show before!! Last night was no exception. Of the 150+ attendees, approximately 20 of them had NOT been to an improv show before. EVER. Soooooooooo.....

With that in mind, I thought maybe we'd take some time every now and again and talk a bit about improv and all that goes with it. The QCP make it look extremely easy, but there are things going on "behind the scenes" every single time, that contribute to the ease, grace, and wit, of those incredibly talented gentlemen.

Improv is built on a list of rules. That's right. This free-form, free for all, spontaneous art form has rules and regulations that an improver is CONSTANTLY going through in his mind. I always like to say that an improver has a Rolodex in his head that he is flipping through non-stop. And every other little Rolodex card has these words on it: AGREE AND ACCEPT.

Agree and accept is the golden rule of improvisation. This means that NO MATTER WHAT you are given in a scene, you are going to take it, use it, shape it, and make it into something your teammates can use.

The word "agree" tends to throw people off. This doesn't mean that you, on a personal level, have to like what someone offered to you. What it DOES mean is that in the context of that scene or game, what you're given is the BEST THING EVER EVER EVER and you are going to positively and with full force, embrace that idea/suggestion/statement, and then do what is personally, my favorite part of the process. The improver is then going to HEIGHTEN AND EXPLORE.

H&E are vital to a scene or game going anywhere. Your scene partner can turn to you and say, "We should go to the mall today." You respond, "Yes, we should." And well....that would cover rule number one. But, if you don't heighten and explore, you're still stuck. So your response should be something like, "Yes, we should. And while we're there, I want to eat in the food court. Nothing like some Orange Julius on a Saturday morning."

There. NOW we have something to work with. We accepted the idea that we are going to the mall, and by using heighten and explore, we gave back that we want to go to the food court, visit the Orange Julius, and that it's Saturday. That's three more ingredients you threw in the pot. Now we mix it all together and see what we can make of that.

Business guru Dale Carnegie, in his book, How to Win Friends and Influence People, also has a list of rules. If you'll check, you'll see that his number one rule is "Don't criticize, condemn, or complain." Hhhhmmmm....... well lookie there.

So now it's your turn. Your improv challenge for today is to "Agree and Accept" then "Heighten and Explore".

The shows for Friday, February 13, at Riley's are filling up FAST, so make your reservation today!

Here's the info:

Guests will be treated to dinner (steak, chicken or salmon with all the fixings) followed by an improv comedy show provided by Q City. Bring your appetite and your belly laughs.

Two shows to choose from:6:00 pm - 8:15 pm or 7:15 pm - 9:30 pm

Tickets are $25 per person to be paid at the door. Tickets include dinner, non-alcoholic beverage, show, tax and gratuity.

These shows are sure to sell out! Please call Riley's Restaurant (513-771-3361) to make reservations. Ask for the Manager on Duty. Please have ready your name(s), choice of show time, and choice of entree(s).

WOW!!! That's all I can say!

Thank you sooooooooo much to those who were able to come out and join us tonight. And to those who we had to turn down, thank you for your understanding. We hated telling you we were already sold out five days before the show........but at the same time.....WE SOLD OUT FIVE DAYS BEFORE THE SHOW!!! Incredible!!!

Word has begun to spread that our beloved Christopher will be on sabbatical from the troupe for a while, and that we are beginning to look for new members for the Q City Players. We already have our college interns in place, so now we need to begin to add to the troupe. As Missy said at the last show, we "refuse to use the phrase, 'replacement for Chris' because there is none". And, that's not what's happening here. He is a card carrying founding member of the QCP, and will join us when he's back in town. But.... that does still leave us a member short. So who's up for it?!?!

What we need now are people who are willing to take that first step and let us know you're interested in auditioning, or at least finding out more info. So.....if this is you, here's what you do:

1. Contact the director, Missy, at this email: missy@housethatjackbuilt.org, and please type "Improv Audition Interest" in the subject line.

2. Missy will get in touch with you and set up a time to meet, get coffee, and chat. We want you to know what you're getting into first. There are so many ideas of what improv is, how it's done, etc., that we want you to know our philosophy, and how we work before you decide if you want to audition. You may hear how we do things, and not be interested at all. Who knows?!?! It happens believe it or not.
3. Try and attend one of the upcoming workshops to test the water. In fact, we have one this week!

4. Auditioning dates and processes will be posted, and we'll talk more about that as time comes.

Happy day of birth to our very own Sean Michael Murphy.

You may be sitting there wondering...."Well just how special is this day??" Well let me tell you my friends, it's INCREDIBLY special. Know why? Because "S.M. Squared" shares this day with some pretty fantastic folks. For instance:

The man who would be Vader....Mr. Hayden Christensen! May the cake be with you.

From "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", it's stage and screen legend Mr. Tim Curry. (--who people for some reason always get mixed up with Terrance Mann--whose birthday is NOT today.)

Kentucky's very own Ms. Ashley Judd.

Today is also the birthday of the late Dudley Moore (seen here with Canada's own Helen Reddy.) She is woman, and he is no longer with us. (Coincidentally, he died the same day as Milton Berle. Weird, ey?)

And finally, we would be amiss if we did not mention that today is the birthday of "Darrin #2", Mr. Dick Sargent.
